I hadn’t even graduated from the fire academy before I realized that what was reported on the nightly news was not necessarily what had actually happened. Then, after a few years on the job, I began to see other things the public rarely, if ever, saw—such as how the city and the department would target certain individuals, sometimes for political reasons and other times for reasons that were simply personal.
